Martin D-28 Billy Strings Acoustic Guitar - Natural with Antique Toner

The Interstellar Tone Traveler has already encountered Billy Strings in this catalog — the accessible D-X2E that brings his vision to a broader audience — but the D-28 Billy Strings Signature is a different conversation entirely. This is the flagship: a guitar built from the bones of a specific, irreplaceable instrument that Billy has carried with him through every galaxy he's crossed. His prized 1940 D-28 — pre-war, pre-scarcity, pre-compromise — is the source document for everything about this guitar's design, and every specification reflects a deliberate choice made around the way Billy Strings actually plays. The custom nut width of 1 23/32" is slightly wider than the original vintage instrument, providing more room for the fast, intricate patterns that define his flatpicking style, while the unique scale length reduces string tension for expressive bends and rapid-fire lines without sacrificing the projection and clarity that a Dreadnought demands. Solid East Indian rosewood back and sides over solid spruce, forward-shifted GE-scalloped X-bracing, bold herringbone top inlay, and Zig-Zag back purfling place this firmly in the tradition of the finest pre-war Martins — the same tradition that Billy has always played toward, studied, and celebrated throughout his entire artistic life. Where the D-X2E is the invitation, the D-28 Billy Strings Signature is the full immersion. Abalone Diamonds and Squares Long fingerboard inlay on ebony, antique toner gloss finish, and antique white binding dress the guitar with the kind of vintage elegance that suits its inspiration. The nickel enclosed gear tuners — exclusive to Martin and found nowhere else in the standard lineup — are a distinctive visual signature that sets this instrument apart from every other Dreadnought in the catalog, giving it a refined, slightly old-world character that feels entirely appropriate for a guitar born from a 1940 original. A custom paper label inside bears Billy's pre-printed signature and graphic, and a hardshell case ensures this one travels in the protection it deserves. Two Billy Strings guitars in the Interstellar catalog — one for every player, one for the serious devotee.
