Martin HD-28 Standard Series Acoustic Guitar - Natural Aged Toner

The "H" in HD-28 tells you everything you need to know about what separates this Dreadnought from its legendary sibling: herringbone. Bold, unmistakable, and deeply connected to the pre-war Martin tradition that defines the golden age of acoustic guitar craftsmanship, the herringbone top inlay transforms the Dreadnought platform into something that carries a different kind of visual and historical weight. The Interstellar Tone Traveler recognizes the HD-28 immediately for what it is — the Dreadnought for players who want the full power and projection of the D-28 voice wrapped in appointments that reach back to the instruments that started it all. Solid Sitka spruce over East Indian rosewood back and sides, forward-shifted GE-scalloped X-bracing refined for the 2025 Standard Series, and a 25.4" scale length deliver exactly the bold, resonant, full-spectrum tone that has defined acoustic music for nearly a century. The aging toner top leans into the vintage aesthetic with quiet confidence, and the Zig-Zag back purfling with black stripe — a more ornate and historically evocative treatment than the standard Style 28 stripe — signals that this guitar was built with a deeper nod to the pre-war archive than the D-28 alone provides. Where the D-28 relies on its simplicity and the D-41 announces itself with abalone at every turn, the HD-28 occupies a precise and deeply satisfying middle ground: the Diamonds and Squares Long abalone fingerboard inlay on ebony brings a genuine vintage elegance to the playing surface without tipping into ostentation, and the Style 28 multi-stripe rosette grounds the instrument in its rosewood Dreadnought heritage. Antique white binding, bone bridge pins with faux tortoise dots, and nickel open-gear tuners with butterbean knobs complete an instrument that wears the 2025 Standard Series refinements — reimagined neck profile, thinner fingerboard, refined bridge and heel — while remaining fundamentally, gloriously true to the spirit that made players fall in love with the HD-28 in the first place. For the Interstellar Tone Traveler who wants the Dreadnought at its most historically resonant, this is the one.
